Listed London Underground Stations – A photographic journey.
Around 25% of London Underground Stations are
English Heritage listed buildings, Grade 2 and above.
Places that are part of our daily journeys, and unusually in this present day, stand out quietly, providing portals to travel, memories, and for those with time to stop and stare, designs and buildings far from ordinary.
This project provided a chance to return to medium format black and white analogue photography, explore London, and visit interesting, often overlooked, architecture.

The process for creating Timeless Underground Portals
The use of a classic medium format camera, and going square, was new and at the same time gently familiar, from working with Polaroid images.
Once the first images were processed, the formatting almost dictated itself, a combination of images, (a micro journey), a single selected view, bleed through on the printing, and a four image polaroid lift, all A3 size.
Meetings with friends, chats about different layouts, all helped in creating the final presentation.

Original images were taken on a Hasselblad 500cm Anniversary Edition, with 90 mm lens, using a mix of new and out of date medium format analogue film.
For each station:
Visit only once.
Take six photos:
Three on XP2, three on expired film, (FP4 or TriX, as available).
Select four from the six images, create a linear picture, select a single frame as a stand alone image.
Create a Polaroid Lift from the linear images.
