Timeless Underground Portals

Listed London Underground Stations – A photographic journey

Around 25% (75) of London Underground Stations are English Heritage listed buildings, Grade 2 and above.

Places that are part of our daily journeys, and unusually in this present day, stand out quietly, providing portals to travel, memories, and for those with time to stop and stare, designs and buildings far from ordinary.

The project was driven by a curiosity to visit these ‘open house’ listed buildings, find out more about the people involved, take photos and possibly produce a collection of prints.

While discussing the idea with friends, I was offered the loan of a Hasselblad 500 CM with a supply of expired film by Magda Segal, a great portrait photographer.

This offer started the ideas for Timeless Underground Portals:

Using the Hasselblad 500 CM, and a mix of new and expired black and white analogue film, take six photos of each the surface buildings and entrances.

Selecting four of the six pictures taken, to produce a linear image and create a micro journey of viewpoints.
Then choose a single frame as a stand alone image.
Also create a Polaroid Lift from the linear images.

Thanks to:

Magda Segal for the loan of the camera, and the 17 rolls of old stock 120 film.
Magda, SteveO, Cath and Jill for listening, constructive advice and general support.
Mini Lab at Skears Photographic for processing and scanning.
Family and friends for support and indulgence.

Logistics
68 Stations visited, 408 images, 34 rolls of 120 film, 272 Polaroids (34 packs of film).
